It was a night of talking until dawn, and early in the morning Long Tai Po went to the village to borrow a mobile phone.

In a moment he reacted to the fact that we did not speak the language, so he turned to the yellow-skinned man he had brought behind him and said something.
The yellow-skinned man looked at us and spoke, “You’re all Chinese smugglers?”
Ouyang Nuo bristled, “Dude, talk properly, we’re not smugglers, we’re fleeing for our lives.”
The man frowned slightly and looked to the policeman who also said a bunch of things, the policeman looked at us, paused slightly and said something to the yellow-skinned man again.
After a while it was barely clear that someone had approached the Burmese police to search the border and say that someone was missing over here.
The exchange came down to sounding less like bad guys and more like family members of a few of us looking for each other.
Ouyang Nuo looked at a few of us and spoke, “Which one of you has family members who are so powerful that they can contact the Burmese police?”
A few people froze, and Yang Ting was a little unsure, “I don’t really know about that, my dad works for the government at the border, but I don’t think she deserves me being brought here, and it’s unlikely she knows I’ll be in Burma!”
